Our Favorite Recipes WASSAIL
This recipe is also one of Mary’s favorites. And uses the crockpot, too!
1 gallon apple cider
2 cups cranberry juice
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon allspice
2 cinnamon sticks
1 orange
whole cloves
1. Peel orange and stud with whole cloves.
2. Cook all ingredients in a crock pot for 1 hour on high and low for 5 hours. Can be served after 1 hour of cooking.
3. If saving for leftovers, remove orange and cinnamon sticks and sieve wassail with cheesecloth (you’ll be glad you did, the spices you sieve out will make the wassail bitter if left in). Tip from Mary: Save the original Apple Cider container for the leftovers. Refrigerate and reheat to serve.

DONNA’S CHOCOLATE MAYONNAISE CAKE
We just celebrated Mike and our granddaughter, Elizabeth’s, birthdays with this family favorite. We like to make it one day ahead, it tastes even better on the second day (although it’s hard not to eat it right out of the oven).
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup baking cocoa
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup Miracle Whip, or mayonnaise
1 cup cold water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1. Combine all ingredients, mixing well.
2. Bake in one 9 x 13 greased pan or 2 greased 8 or 9 inch pans in an oven pre-heated to 350, (375 for high altitude).
3. Bake about 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
4. Cool and frost.
